An American Airlines pilot is at the center of a dispute after an airport employee accused him of racial profiling.
Phillip Barfield, who is Black, was waiting in a secured jet bridge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport when he began filming a confrontation with a white pilot.
Barfield stood in line with other uniformed and badged wheelchair assistants as they waited for passengers to disembark an inbound flight. He claims a pilot followed him down the jet bridge to pointedly question his clearance because he has “long dreads, wears jewelry and Jordans, and has gold in my mouth,” as he wrote in a comment on his Sept. 24 Instagram Reel.
According to Barfield, the pilot pointed to him and said, “That guy doesn’t look like he belongs here,” even though his badge was clearly visible. He added in a follow-up comment: “He followed the only Black guy with a badge and in uniform but didn’t mention none of the other people present.”
Barfield also claimed the pilot broke security protocol just to confront him, and the video appears to back up that claim. In the video, Barfield and another employee repeatedly tell the pilot that TSA regulations required him to undergo a scan.
TSA rules require all personnel, including pilots, to have credentials checked at the gate before entering the jet bridge. The pilot allegedly bypassed the exact security measures he was attempting to enforce.
The interaction has divided viewers, with many siding with the pilot, saying he was just doing his job.
One self-described pilot wrote: “A pilot’s job is everything that has to do with the safety of the aircraft and its environment. You better believe if I think you look suspicious, I will ask you to show your credentials, as I’m entitled to do.” Another person went even further, saying, “If he’s simply asking a question, I don’t understand why that’s seen as racist. Some of us are just trigger-happy, and when it comes to real issues, we are silent! Get a life.”
Some commenters turned their criticism on Barfield himself. One wrote, “He did the right thing…stop making everything about race.”
Barfield has popped up repeatedly in the comments to defend his claim of racial profiling. “There are a few racists on this page commenting… Does everyone notice he never mentions the other guys against the wall?” he wrote.
As one supporter put it, “It is racism if he wouldn’t have done the same thing to a white person. Pilot clearly needs training that indicators of a security breach aren’t just things he personally doesn’t like.”
