Mary J. Blige is reflecting on a decision she made earlier in life that she now views with more complicated emotions: choosing not to have children.

The 55-year-old R&B singer discussed motherhood during an appearance on the Michelle Obama Podcast.

She explained that her perspective was shaped largely by watching relatives navigate the demands of raising children.

Blige said that when she was younger, she saw family members struggling with childcare and losing some of the freedom they had before becoming parents.

“When I was younger, I saw my family members struggle raising kids, needing baby sitters, not having freedom, so when I was younger I made the choice not to have any kids,” she said.

At the time, those experiences reinforced Blige’s decision to remain child-free. She said seeing relatives deal with the responsibilities of parenthood influenced how she imagined her own future.

Her feelings, however, have become less straightforward with age.

“But then, when you get older you get to see how valuable their teenagers are to them. Now it’s like ‘Oh man’ but at the same time it’s like ‘Ehhh’,” she said.

Blige explained that watching those same family members develop close relationships with their children, particularly as they reached their teenage years, gave her a different perspective on what she had chosen to forgo.

“But now as I got older and get to see how their teenagers are valuable to them, I sometimes regret not having them early too,” she said.

Blige’s comments suggest that her feelings about motherhood have shifted over time rather than remaining firmly rooted in the decision she made when she was younger. The singer said the experiences she witnessed as a young woman looked different once she became older and saw the relationships her relatives built with their children.

The Grammy-winning singer has spent decades building a career in R&B, releasing hits like “Family Affair” and collaborating with artists such as the late George Michael.

Blige’s romantic history has also included several high-profile names throughout her career. She spent much of the 1990s in a turbulent relationship with Jodeci singer K-Ci. The pair dated for several years and became engaged in 1995 before eventually splitting. Their relationship later influenced much of the material on Blige’s 1994 album My Life

After her relationship with K-Ci ended, Blige was linked to R&B singer Case in the mid-1990s. Rumors have also linked her romantically to Nas and the late Tupac Shakur, although there has been no proof of a relationship.

Blige eventually found a long-term partner in music producer Kendu Isaacs. The two began dating around 2000 and married in December 2003. Their marriage lasted more than a decade before Blige filed for divorce in 2016. Their divorce was finalized in 2018.

While Blige acknowledged that she occasionally wonders what motherhood might have looked like for her, her comments did not suggest that she views her past decision as entirely wrong. Instead, she described the realization that can come with growing older and seeing family relationships develop in ways she may not have anticipated.

This is not the first time Blige has spoken publicly about her decision not to have children. In a 2022 interview with E! Daily Pop, the singer explained that she had made a conscious choice to remain child-free after watching people close to her struggle with the responsibilities of raising children.

“Oh, I’m not there yet. I am not there yet so I’m good,” she said. “Listen, I have nieces and nephews forever. I’m always watching how people are scrambling around for babysitters. I don’t wanna go through that.”

She added, “I like my freedom. I like being able to get up and go and move and do what I want to do. I don’t want to have to tend to someone all the time. Right now, that’s where I’m at. I don’t think it’s gonna happen.”

While married to Isaacs, who had three children from a previous relationship, she discussed how becoming a stepmother was part of her life during their marriage.

“I’ve been a stepmother for three years now and love them so much,” she said previously as well, in a 2007 interview with Redbook, as reported by Essence.

In that earlier conversation, Blige also pushed back against the idea that women must follow a particular timeline when it comes to marriage and motherhood. Her comments offered a glimpse into how she had weighed the realities of parenthood against her own goals and experiences, years before she revisited those feelings with Michelle Obama.
